UNHCR Step with Refugees Campaign

Fun Run – Sunday 29 September

A reminder about the 5th Annual Fun Run in Urdaneta Village on Sunday 29 September. This is the perfect chance for us all to embrace one of the core goals of the Wellbeing Framework – to live an active and balanced lifestyle. Set in beautiful Urdaneta Village, the run allows us to be both physically active and connect with nature. What better way to do this, than for parents, teachers, support staff and students to run together to help raise money for our Service Learning Partners.

UNHCR Step with Refugees Campaign

Joining the run this year also allows you to take part in the UNHCR Step with Refugees Campaign.

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees in the Philippines, is supporting this global campaign to raise awareness about the plight of refugees, by asking us all to join together to cover 2 billion km in 12 months; the distance covered by refugees worldwide to reach the nearest point of safety.

It is very simple to take part. Just go to the website, and either manually enter the kms you are going to run, or connect through your fitness app (fitbit, strava or google fit). Your kms will then add automatically, and you will be kept informed about the difference you are making.

BSM Service Learning have committed to contribute 10php for every km that is run on Sunday 29 September to the campaign, so please get involved, show your solidarity with refugees both near and far, and help us to raise awareness, raise money to protect them and help them rebuild their lives.

Last year, we had 530 runners, covering almost 1,830 km. The biggest turn-out was from Key Stage 2, over a third of all Primary Students were involved, and Mindanao won the House Competition. An amazing result. Let’s see if we can do even better this year! Get chatting to your classmates, sports teams and friends from outside BSM. Put Sunday 29 September in your diary, and please get your tickets which will be on sale from Monday 16 September 2019.

Get involved

Tickets remain steady at Php 500 for adults and Php 300 for students, and event T-shirts will be on sale as well. House points will be given for EVERY runner, and prizes will be awarded for the best fancy dress. We are hoping to have some fun games to keep you entertained afterwards as well!

If running isn’t your thing, you can still get involved. We need volunteers to help make a bake sale happen (by baking, shopping and/or manning the stall on the day); to sponsor prizes for winners of the fancy dress competition, and to provide refreshments for tired runners. We particularly need:

  • Baked items for our Big Bake Sale (homemade or shop-bought – we don’t mind!)
  • Sausages, bacon and buns for breakfast baps (plus volunteers to help cook them!)
  • Cold drinks for our thirsty runners (water and any other cold drinks please)
  • Prizes for our fancy dress competition (anyone with contacts at companies who are happy to donate some products in exchange for free advertising – please get in touch!)
  • Volunteers who are happy to help with the bake sale, or selling tickets in advance

Please fill in this form if you can help at all: Bake Sale / BBQ Goods, or email us if you can help.

We can all MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Please help. No contribution is too small – or too large! Please contact Emma Denton, Erwin Adevoso or Runah Domoguen to discuss any ideas you may have.
