Children’s Home Christmas Gifts

Year 1: Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children’s Home Christmas Gifts
We are delighted to share some photos of the residents of Tahanan ng Pagmamahal Children’s Home, receiving and opening the Christmas Gifts they received from our Year 1 students.

All the gifts were carefully selected by the students, wrapped in school, and delivered in time for Christmas. Well done Year 1 – you helped to make some children, less fortunate than yourselves, very happy this Christmas.

Service Learning Week: 14-16 January, 2019
Well, what a week for our Senior Students. Those who weren’t taking Mock Exams, were out on their Service Learning Week trips. Year 12 were completing their Bayanihan projects, and Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were out of school getting hot, dusty, and out of their comfort zones in a variety of settings.

It has been fantastic to hear the stories from students about their experiences, and to observe the change in understanding about how others live, what they have (and don’t have), and the impact we can make.

Year 7 created an equipped science learning space at Talaongan West Elementary School (including installing a terrarium, creating supplies and instructions for science lessons ‘in a shoebox’, building new workbenches and putting in an equipped aquaphonics system). They also tidied up the vegetable garden, installed a climbing wall, created a peaceful reading space in the library; engaged in a range of sports with the local school children; and ensured 25 Solar Lights were distributed.

Year 8 focussed on improving the outdoor learning spaces at Canlubang Elementary School by removing a derelict nipa hut, and installing a brand new one; creating a covered outdoor learning space in the garden; weeding the entire garden ready for vegetable planting (including inside all the polytunnels); and painting theoutside walls of the school.

Year 9 spent three days painting houses, walls, kerbs and improving the garden areas at the GK Village for PWD that BSM have been working with for a number of years. At the end of the week, they also visited their new friends in their houses, learning more about their lives.

Year 10 spent time at Chosen Children’s Village (a home for life for children and young people with disabilities), and had a day at Stepping Stones School. They gardened, engaged with the residents at CCV, helped to create a brand new sensory room at SS, developed the library facilities (including the donation of books from the BSM LRC), erected a disused playground, and painted a mural behind the flower area.

Note: We have been asked by Chosen Children’s Village not to take pictures of their residents.

Reflection
On their return to school, our students have been busy reflecting on their experiences. They now have an opportunity to consider what they have gained, what they would do differently, and if there are ways they can continue to contribute this year.

International Evening – Friday 15 February, 2019
Thank you to everyone who attended the first meeting on Tuesday. It was great to see some familiar faces there – and to meet some new parents wanting to find out more. We are keen to get as many people involved as possible, so please get in touch with Emma or Erwin if you think you can spare a bit of time to help out. You don’t need to help your own country – you can combine with others who have maybe lived in another country, and have a soft spot for it!

Please keep an eye on your emails, as we will be asking for specific help for some countries soon. And do join the Google Classroom, using the following code: 80u33k2. Remember, we need help with food stalls, entertainment, sponsors and great raffle prizes please!
