Now that the Fun Run is a distant memory, and Bonfire Night is behind us, it is time to start thinking about the next big Service Learning event. We are delighted to announce an even more fun-filled experience than usual, at this year’s International Evening. Please mark your diaries for Friday 7 February, and start thinking about how you can get involved. February seems a long way away, however it is only 7 school weeks!
We would like to invite anyone interested in finding out more about this amazing community event to an initial meeting on Friday 6 December in the Senior Cafeteria. We will start the meeting at 8am, but feel free to come along before for a coffee and a catch-up. We’re hoping to see lots of familiar faces, as well as some new recruits! Don’t worry if you are new to BSM, and haven’t even been to International Evening before. Getting involved is a great chance to make new friends, and to connect with new people across BSM. It is a lovely community event, made even better when we work together.
BSM Rugby Big Boots Drive: Monday 25 – Friday 29 November
Thank you to everyone who donated rugby and football boots to the first BSM Rugby Big Boots Drive this week. These boots will be donated by BSM Rugby to the teams that BSM regularly play against, many of whom either have to share boots, or end up playing without. Your donation will help protect these youngsters from serious injury, and allow them to continue their passion for sports. Well done to Miranda Doig-Henderson 13ATU, Livia Verlini 12NBR and Olivia van Niekerk, 11ARE for all your efforts.
Bayanihan Book Drive: Monday 25 – Friday 29 November
This week also saw a book drive for Kalayaan Elementary School. Angela Pineda and Arianna Everley of 12PHA organised the collection of English, Tagalog and dual language children’s books for their Bayanihan project. Thank you to everyone who donated.
BSM Christmas Cards 2019 – On Sale Now!
A reminder that the 2019 BSM Christmas Cards are now on sale, with all proceeds going to Service Learning. They are on sale at all school events, but if you would like to get yours at other times – please come to the SSC (first floor, El Nido building) where we have the stocks. Alternatively, send an email to Emma Denton, or speak to Runah or Jozy at the reception desk on the top floor of the Main Building, and we can arrange delivery. BSM Marketing have generously paid for the cards to be printed, and so every peso you spend goes directly to the Service Learning partners that we work with. In addition to the 2019 cards, we also have a limited number of cards from previous years available, on sale at half price!
Springboard Foundation: Christmas Hampers, School Shoes and Teddy Donations
One of the constant features of the BSM Service Learning Programme is Springboard Foundation. We partner with them on many projects, and always look forward to supporting their Christmas campaigns. This year, our Year 7 students are making Christmas Hampers to donate to 60 Grade 6 students at Kalayaan Elementary School, and we have also donated 60 pairs of “school shoes and a teddy” to one of Springboard’s partner beneficiaries, Sun for All Children located in Manila.
The campaign to supply a pair of shoes and a cuddly toy for Filipino children living in poverty is their main drive for Christmas this year. The shoes are made locally in Marikina, are real leather, and include arch support. They are also designed to last 3-5 years so they can be shared among siblings. The beneficiary, Sun for All Children, work in the slum areas of Manila, with the street children and the Bajaus, a group of indigenous people from Mindanao. They support and guide the children, motivating them, helping them to go to school and teaching them how to read and write.
The Christmas Hampers will be distributed by the Year 7 Service Learning Reps on Thursday 5 December, and the “school shoes and a teddy” will be distributed on our behalf by Springboard on Wednesday 11 December. We look forward to sharing the pictures with you before we break for Christmas.
