Welcome back and I hope you have all had a great first week – weather accepted. As you can imagine a number of things have gone on over the summer and one of these was receiving a letter from a BEI (BSM) Scholar. We are running this scholarship programme to support local Taguig High School students who would otherwise be unable to access university. We have helped 34 scholars over 14 years. These scholars are carefully selected and identified with the help of our Support Staff. It is a programme that gives us huge pride as it supports the scholars to realise their dreams and assists these wonderful motivated students and their families immeasurably. The author of this letter has just completed her degree and graduated Magna Cum Laude (second top in her cohort) and I would like to share parts of this letter with you, as I think you will find it as heart warming as we did.
“To: Mr. Brendan Egan and the BSM Scholarship Committee
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh! (May the peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be with you!) Four years ago while I am hanging out at my friend’s house wondering what would be my next step after high school, I received a mysterious phone call. I am really hesitant to answer it, since the number is not registered on my cellphone. However, there is a voice telling me that I should answer it. Upon answering the call I heard a man (Sir Erwin) with an angelic voice telling me that I am selected to undergo a screening process for a scholarship grant. As the call ended I felt a mishmash of emotions, I am happy and excited because I know that if ever the offer is legitimate, it would be a great opportunity for me to pursue college without worrying about the expenses.
…. As I go back to the day when I saw the sweetest smile from Ms. Achie as I undergo the process of selection, until the day that I received the confirmation that I am officially a scholar, I still can’t believe that among all the students who are much deserving than me, I was chosen to be one of the BEI (BSM) scholars. Honestly, until now I am wondering what you have seen in me, but whatever it is I hope that I didn’t fail your expectations. …. This scholarship was indeed extraordinary and exceeds any other scholarships. It is not a scholarship which simply shouldered my school expenses, because for me it became my second family. A family who helped me to be a better individual, a family who uplifted me and gave me strength to get out from my shell. And for that I will be forever grateful to meet such amazing people! I admit that I really felt blessed during my college years.
… Now that I have finished my course I honestly don’t know how to express my deepest gratitude to my BEI family for all the help that I received. I know this letter will never be enough to show how thankful I am. In reality I belong to a humble family, a family who can’t send me to a prestigious school and can’t support my studies. I really thought that I wouldn’t be able to take the course that I want because I am financially incapable. But now, here I am a degree holder of the course that I want from a prestigious university! Aside from your support to my academics, I would also like to say thank you for supporting my other endeavors even though it is already not in the scope of the agreement I have signed and I will always be grateful for that. Thank you Mr. Brendan Egan for financially supporting me in presenting my research in Indonesia and for always showing your support to us even though I know that you are busy.
…. I know that you don’t demand anything in return from me, yet I will do my best to make this family proud. I am looking forward to attending annual scholars’ gathering in the future, I hope I am still welcome. Whatever I will achieve in the future this family will always be a part. I will not be the person I am today without your help. I will always hope and pray that the program will continuously succeed. As I take a new journey in my life I will always look back to the family I wholeheartedly love. Thank you BSM This family will always be in my heart I love you all!”
